On June 18, Mr Terence Meehan was announced as the 14th RSL State President at the 96th RSL Annual General Meeting and State Congress. Mr Meehan moves into this role from the position of Deputy State President.
Voted in by the RSL Sub Branches, Mr Meehan believes that it is vital that the RSL continues to focus on gaining a younger membership while continuing to focus on offering advocacy welfare services.
“We must encourage younger veterans and younger ex-service men and women to join our ranks, they are our future, we must build on the great work already being done by our Sub Branches to achieve this aim,” Mr Meehan said.
Mr Meehan also believes that the RSL must act as a voice for the younger members to ensure that their concerns are heard.
“Our younger members need to have a voice within the RSL to take forward to government their concerns. We should be listening to them, encourage them to speak out and supporting them in every possible way,” Mr Meehan said.
Mr Meehan is a member of the RSL Sunshine Coast & Regional District, Maroochydore Sub Branch. He has had a variety of appointments with the RSL. These include Sub Branch Presidency, Sub Branch Advocate and Delegate and District Vice Presidency. He has advised in various forums and committees some of these include the VVCS Regional Consultative Forum, National Veterans’ Affairs Committee, Advocates and Pensions Officers Forum.
The RSL Annual General Meeting and State Congress is the supreme policy-making forum for the League in Queensland, where views of both current and ex-service personnel at all levels are debated.
With approximately 39,000 members across Queensland this decision will play a significant part the future of the RSL and is highly significant to its membership.
