On Friday October 28 the official launch of the major fundraising initiative for the Returned & Services Leagues of Australia (Queensland Branch), 2011 RSL Poppy Appeal commences. ANZAC Square in Brisbane’s CBD will become the focal point of Commemoration in the lead up to Remembrance Day.
Since the last RSL Poppy Appeal, Australia has lost an overwhelming nine brave soldiers. Whilst some pay the ultimate sacrifice, others return requiring imperative assistance and the vital funds raised through RSL’s annual Appeal will ensure that the RSL (Queensland Branch) can continue to deliver pension and welfare services.
Four of the losses in the past year were from Enoggera based 6RAR. Lieutenant Colonel Mark Jennings, Commanding Officer for 6RAR, will give the keynote address offering a unique insight into the camaraderie of 6RAR and how the losses have affected the battalion.
The Honourable Anna Bligh MP, Premier of Queensland will make an official donation to the Appeal on behalf of the State Government to kick-start this major fundraising initiative.
RSL (Queensland Branch) are faced with the reality of the health issues suffered by veterans, both young and old, daily. These health issues include, but are not limited to post traumatic stress disorder, alcoholism, anxiety disorders, depression, drug addiction, service related injuries and cancers. Funds raised during the 2011 RSL Poppy Appeal will go towards providing vital advocacy and welfare services for veterans, the currently serving ADF personnel and their families.
Poppy Appeal Initiatives:
As part of the 2011 RSL Poppy Appeal, ‘Fields of Remembrance’ and ‘Poppyman’ will be introduced across Queensland.
- Made from poppies, ‘Poppyman’ represents those men and women who have paid the ultimate sacrifice protecting Australia with each poppy symbolising a single sacrifice.
- Queenslanders across the State are encouraged to honour and remember those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice serving in our armed forces by visiting their closest ‘Field of Remembrance’ and planting a cross on behalf of the fallen.
