The recent attack on 10 soldiers in Afghanistan sees Australia once again become a country in mourning. On November 11, Remembrance Day 2011, Returned & Services League (Queensland Branch) anticipate a stronger than show of support by Queenslanders to the Australian Defence Force (ADF) community.
Tragically, Friday, November 11, also marks the funeral of Captain Bryce Duffy in Brisbane, one of the recent fallen in the Afghanistan conflict.
“This dreadful incident serves as a timely reminder of the relevance of Remembrance Day. The RSL urge the public to show their support by buying and wearing a poppy andattending a Remembrance Day commemoration.” RSL (Queensland Branch) Chairman, Terry Meehan said.
This Friday, November 11, the Queensland community are invited to join Remembrance Day commemorate ceremonies in over 120 locations across the state. Anzac Square in Brisbane City will again stage the largest of the State’s ceremonies.
Once again, this Friday also sees the annual City Ambush fundraising effort of RSL (Queensland Branch) stretch out across Brisbane’s CBD with the commitment of over 100 soldiers, RSL (Queensland Branch) staff and Westpac volunteers. Sellers will be stationed around the CBD from 6am selling poppies and accepting donations to raise vital funds for RSL Queensland. All funds raised will be dedicated to the care and well-being of Australian veterans and currently serving defence personnel.
Remembrance Day is an important day of reflection, commemorating all wars and conflicts in which Australians have made a valuable contribution. Moreover, the day recognises the supreme sacrifice made by brave men and women to ensure Australians live in a free country.
