The inaugural Malaya & Borneo Veterans’ Day Ceremony will be celebrated nationally on Wednesday, August 31 to remember those who fell and those who served in the Malayan Emergency.

The Malayan Emergency was declared on June 18, 1948 in response to the growing threat from the Malayan Communist Party. Australia became involved in 1950 with the arrival of RAAF aircraft and personnel in Singapore.

On July 31, 1960 the Malayan government officially declared the Emergency over, as the threat continued to dissipate. The Malayan Emergency was the longest continuous military commitment in Australia's history. Of the 7,000 Australian Navy, Army and Air Force personnel that served during the Emergency, 39 were killed in and 27 were wounded.

In conjunction Malaya Borneo Veterans Association Australia, the Banyo RSL Sub Branch will be holding a ceremony at the Memorial Walk, Gallipoli Barracks, Enoggera commencing at 11am on Wednesday, August 31. Light refreshments will be available afterwards. For more information contact Malaya Borneo Veterans' Association Australia Queensland President, Allen Edwards on 07 3396 6705 or RSL Sub Branch President, Ron Virgen on 07 3267 0249.
