On 15 August 1945, Victory in the Pacific was announced. The Japanese had surrendered.
After six years, the war was finally over. Families could look forward to being reunited with returning servicemen and women, and life could return to normal.
The announcement released a torrent of emotion. Thousands of people flooded Brisbane’s streets, ecstatic that the war was over. The government called a public holiday and troops marched victoriously down Queen Street.
But beneath the jubilation ran a thread of sadness. Many would not return home, having paid the ultimate price to assure victory. And many would return home broken in body and spirit.
This year, on the 75th anniversary of Victory in the Pacific, RSL Queensland remembers the brave men and women who defended Australia in WWII.
