    Remembrance Day poppy crochet pattern

As Remembrance Day approaches, consider crocheting your own poppy as a symbol of remembrance.
    Remembrance Day

The red poppy has been a symbol of remembrance around the world for more than 100 years. Flanders poppies bloomed on World War I battlefields and became synonymous with remembering those whose lives were lost in conflict.

Create your own poppy with this easy-to-follow crochet pattern for a four-petal poppy, with no sewing required.

Perfect for beginners, the poppy comes together quickly using just two colours.

Once your poppy is complete, attach a safety pin to the back and wear it on your lapel, or display it with pride.

    Pattern

Row 1: Forming the poppy centre

Using black cotton, make a magic circle (magic loop).

Into the magic loop: 3 Ch (does not represent a stitch) then 12 DC (total of 12 stitches). SS into 1st DC and tie off, leaving enough yarn to darn in.

    Row 2: Forming the petals

Using red cotton: Ch^ into any stitch in row 2 then *(SC, DC, HTC) into next stitch, (HTC, TC, HTC) then (HTC, DC SC)**.

    * to ** forms one petal.

Repeat from * to ** three times. SS into first SC (total 36 stitches).

Row 3: Adding edges to the petals

    Continue using the red yarn.

SS^ into *SC of first petal. Then 2SC into each stitch x 7, SS.**

Repeat * to ** three times. SS into SS^ and tie off (total of 72 stitches).

    Finishing your crochet poppy

Use a darning needle to thread loose ends through the back of the poppy.

Then, simply snip off the remaining thread and attach or sew a small safety pin onto the back.
